In 2023, resurfacing and ditching work was done on about one-third of Atlantic View Trail, and branches alongside the entire length of the trail were cut back to restore the trail to the width necessary for Active Transportation standards. We added 21 new sign posts and signage. Most of this was done to comply with safety requirements around driveway-trail intersections on the eastern section of the trail. The intersections also had brush cut to improve sight lines.
Three deteriorating wooden benches were replaced and six new benches were installed along the trail. The new benches are made of recycled plastic and are designed to be more accessible for people with mobility issues.
Several garbage cans have been installed by the trail, resulting in a great reduction in the amount of litter along the trail. Each garbage can is tended by a volunteer from the neighbourhood.
From November 2023 to April 2024, by agreement with Nova Scotia Parks, volunteers from the Surfers Association of Nova Scotia (SANS) and Atlantic View Trail Association (AVTA) cleaned one of the toilets at the beach park in order to keep it available during the winter. This was done on a trial basis; we do not know yet whether the agreement will be renewed for the 2024-25 winter.
We would like to thank our funders—Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage, and the Trans Canada Trail Foundation—for their contributions, which enabled us to get these projects done.
Thanks also to the volunteers who donated many hours to these projects and other maintenance work on the trail.
